Loraine Tulleken, RIP

News that the Revd Loraine Tulleken died earlier today of a suspected heart attack at her home in Kommetjie in the Western Cape is numbing.

One of the great communicators of our church, Loraine edited Southern Anglican for many years and has since been producing by e-mail the Anglicans in Africa News Bulletin.

Her blunt wisdom was on display just five days before her death when she wrote on her Facebook page: “Anyone else irritated by the term ‘passed on’? To die is part of our spiritual journey.”

In Johannesburg, she was known as a dedicated priest, where I was her archdeacon when she served in Sophiatown, and testimony to how she was loved in Cape Town was provided today by the Rector of St Clare’s, Ocean View:

Reverend Lorraine.

Thank you for always welcoming our young ones to celebrate mass with you. Thank you for making them a part of your ministry. Our parish was blessed to be enriched with your knowledge.

You shared your love, friendship and stories with us and we are privileged to have shared your life journey with you.

Rest in peace Reverend Lorraine.

Dance with the angels.?

Our deepest condolences go to her family. – Archbishop Thabo Makgoba

Cindolences to Lorraine’s RIP family and friends. May the comfort and assurance of the Risen Christ fill their hearts and ACSA as well. May she rest in peace, and rise in glory in the arms of the Risen Christ in glory Everlasting!

Heaven has gained an angel from earth, you touched so many you met along your journey, thank you for being part of my life.
May your soul rest in peace and rise in glory.

During Loraine’s couple of years at St Michael’s Weltevreden Park she quickly won the hearts of parishioners for her wonderfully open-hearted and inclusive love people in all their variety – and for her remarkable absence of pretence of any kind. We all loved her deeply!

It was such a joy and pleasure to have known and to serve with Revd Lorraine Tulleken. We will remember how she danced down the isle during procession and how she interacted with our young people to make them feel included in her services.
There were times when she would veer slightly off course from tradition and then she would quip “do you think it matters to GOD if we don’t do the normal?”.
May GOD bless her beautiful soul and may she rest in peace.

I have just heard from Anthony and Mickey about the Requiem Mass tomorrow, and seen on Facebook that my beloved friend Loraine has passed away. Loraine was one of those special people, with a heart and soul bigger than life. She and I went through a lot together a few years ago and I will always be grateful for her love and support. Sincere condolences to Ant and Mickey, and may she rest in the peace that has often eluded her in life. Love always, my friend.

Our beautiful friend, you left us too soon. You meant so much to our whole family, with your unconditional love, wisdom, candour, stories of your life growing up, all the support & attention, generous heart & fabulous wit. We will miss our impromptu dinners, coffee dates, walks, celebrations & pop-ins. You modelled the true meaning of the word’ family’ to us, & your absence leaves a hole in our world. We miss you so much.

I have never met anyone woman as wonderful as Loraine. I got to know her after the death of my beloved sister, and she became my beloved second sister.
I know that she is now content and complete.
I love you Loraine.

Sad news indeed. Lorrian made an great contribution to the life of our church and will be dearly missed. May she rest in peace and her loved ones know the hope of the resurrection to eternal life.

Only just heard about dear Lorraine’s death. We were in the same group that travelled the joyous journey of ordination and were ordained together in Joburg Cathedral. Condolences to her family. Sorely missed.

I have read the sad news of her passing four months down the line. Loraine had faith in me when I arrived as a young reporter at the Natal Mercury newspaper and, through her mentorship, I had the best journalism training anyone could ask for. She was, of course, a superb friend and colleague over the years. RIP, you lovely soul!
